Twapela's Journey

When Twapela arrived at the Centre in 2024, he was 15 years old and had never been to school

He could not read or write, and he had never learned sign language. Like so many deaf children from rural communities, he had been excluded simply because he had no way to communicate.

Today, Twapela’s world looks entirely different. He is thriving academically, communicating confidently in sign language, and has become a role model for younger students. Just as importantly, he has found joy and belonging. He is surrounded by friends, engaged in learning, and building the confidence that comes from finally being understood.

Twapela’s journey reflects what is possible when deaf children are given access to language, education, and a community that believes in them. At the Centre, students do not just learn. They find their voice, their confidence, and their future.

Working at DeSanto Centre for the Deaf means the world to me. Every day, we are learning new signs, new games, and new teaching skills that help us better support our deaf children. It is an amazing experience to grow alongside our students and become stronger educators for them.
