Creating Futures Without Limits
Where specialized education and community transform lives.
Why We Teach
A Decade of Changing Lives
The DeSanto Centre for the Deaf is a school and community in Livingstone, Zambia dedicated to providing deaf children with something many have never had: access to language, education, and belonging.
The only school for the Deaf within eight hours’ travel from Livingstone, the Centre serves children who might otherwise never set foot in a classroom. Beginning with Zambian and American Sign Language as the foundation of all instruction, we offer a full academic curriculum aligned with Zambia’s national education standards, at no cost to students or families.
For children who arrive having never had a way to communicate, and for families who have never been able to fully connect with their own child, DeSanto is where everything changes.
Twapela's Journey
When Twapela arrived at the Centre in 2024 at age 15, he had never been to school, never learned sign language, and had no way to communicate. Today he is thriving academically, communicating confidently, and has become a role model for younger students. Twapela’s journey reflects what becomes possible when a deaf child is given access to language, education, and a community that believes in him.
With Gratitude
The DeSanto Centre for the Deaf bears the name of Gary and Gail DeSanto, whose generosity and unwavering commitment have made this work possible for over a decade. We are deeply grateful for everything they have made possible.
